Gnoll Warlord Gangris Riverpaw World of Warcraft Action Figure Review

Monday, March 15, 2010

The figure we are about to review is another neutral race in the World of Warcraft and I have to say he does look a bit cartoonish. The Gnoll Warlord Gangris Riverpaw hasn't appeared in any other medium in World of Warcraft but I feel he looks like a cartoon character that would run after the rode runner or something like that. Anyway here's a clip about Gnolls in World of Warcraft from WoW Wiki.
Gnolls are one of the younger races of Lordaeron. Indigenous to both the Alterac Mountains and the Redridge Range far to the south, these hyena-like humanoids are extremely aggressive and are often found quarreling amongst themselves. Though relatively intelligent compared to most beasts, they are not very bright by human standards. They have been known to manipulate each other into fights over ridiculous things like "whose shadow is larger".
This figure stands at about 7.75" at it's highest point and features great details and paint. So let's go ahead and move on to the image heavy review.

As this is a Premium Figure it has packaging similar to Tavru Akua. Gangris is a large figure and a heavy one compared to the other figures.

All in all you get 3 pieces from the package, two weapons and the main figure. I really like his weapons but we'll get more into that in a while.

Here's the turn around of the main figure without the weapons. This is another figure that still looks great without the accessories. With the great pose and the tongue hanging out who wouldn't want to have this figure?

Here's a closer look at his weapons. He has a sword and something that looks like a small warglave with cool engravings on it. The sword also has great engravings on it and a skull for good measure. The colors on the weapons look great because they have some kind of stained or rusty look to it. You wouldn't expect him to have a brand spanking new weapon right?

So if this figure looks good without the figure we can safely say it looks doubly great with the weapons on. Wouldn't you agree? Gnolls look fun to play with in World of Warcraft but unfortunately they're not playable as far as I know. Large figure equals large weapons, makes sense to me!

I just can't put my finger on it but he definitely reminds me of a cartoon character somewhere. i think I remember now, one of the hyenas from Disney's "The Jungle Book". Imagine if those guys had weapons, Mogley's sure to be steak by the time they meet him, end of story.

If you skipped reading the clip about Gnolls you might want to note that Gangris is a hyena humanoid. So what separates him from dogs or werewolves? The spots on his back. I'm glad the sculpt and colors on him look consistent all around the figure. Since he's covered in fur you won't see a smooth surface on his body which is great and the fur sculpts look consistent.

The left and right shoulders and basically two different designs and a welcome one indeed. On the left shoulder you see the heavy stuff including a big skull for an armor and the warglave like weapon. As for the right side you have the bare shoulder and the sword. This type of design is well suited for his race as we really can't expect Gnolls to be masters of consistent designs right? Plus it adds contrast which makes the design more interesting. Imagine if you see the same big skull on the right shoulder? It would definitely over power the other parts and overall design of the figure.

The torso is kind of hard to shoot since the big face is covering most of it. He also has a blown horn most likely used to call other Gnolls into action. The colors of the straps are very consistent and I'm glad  no colors were washed on to the other parts where they shouldn't be. The torn leather is a great touch to the overall theme of the figure.

Here's a look at the armors on his legs. As I said the colors look very realistic with some kind of rusty or dirty color to it. I would definitely be disappointed if something looked as this guy doesn't look like he's concerned with hygiene or clean armor right? Authentic design, you gotta love it.

I like the skull knee pads, it's very consistent with the theme of the figure. I think he looks cartoonish because of the huge upper body and then you get the small legs and feet.

If Goofy suddenly went berserk and started killing Mickey Mouse and the other Disney characters he would definitely look something similar to Gangris Riverpaw. With the great pose, consistent sculpts and colors the Gnolls have made a great first impression in being translated into action figures and I can't wait for the next Gnoll to bust out of DC Unltd's action figure line.
