Opera Mini for iPhone First Impressions and Fast Renders

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

With the powers of jailbreaking we got an early hands on of the Opera Mini for the iPhone. Everybody seems to be happy and surprised that it got through Apple's tyrannical and sometimes ridiculous approval process, thinking that Apple would find a way to reject it due to it's sheer competitiveness against Mobile Safari. As expected and advertised, it renders pages faster than Mobile Safari and with all the extra settings and functionality it offers it won't be long until it overtakes Apple's share of the mobile web. Check the break for a couple of images and some first impressions.

Although we found it a bit slow on the startup it really makes it up to us with loading our webpage in a second or two. There's a lot of settings you can tweak including image quality and the size of texts. Tab browsing is really great and loads multiple pages all at once. You can also do pinch to zoom and double tap but apparently it only does it once and you really can't zoom somewhere in between. I was actually expecting double tap to focus on a block of text or paragraph but it only does one zoom in and zoom out. Hopefully we get it when this updates. There's also some parts of our webpage that didn't load correctly or didn't maintain the layout but I think that's mostly because of my crappy coding. Opera Mini will definitely replace Mobile Safari for me. Just give it a try and let's see how it goes for you in the comments.

Here's the promotional clip with some of the features being explained.
